New Caledonia is a French Overseas territory.
It lies midway between Fiji and Australia.
It is a large island of over 7,000 square miles with a population
of approximately 200,000. Many natives are not happy with the French
rule and political unrest is commonplace. Under the current system
they have French Gendarmerie, a National Police
in the Capital city of Noumea, and Municipal police forces.
